Customer Rating: Summary: Effective at silencing your squeaky floors Comment: This product works reasonably well for silencing squeaky floors. I used it specifically through carpet to repair plywood flooring over joists on a second floor. While this method definitely has its drawbacks, I believe that it's the best option available aside from rolling back carpet.
Some important facts to be aware of:
- For light-colored carpet, the joist finder (long screw that you attach to your drill) may leave dark marks on the carpet. These were easily cleaned with carpet cleaner but were nevertheless unexpected.
- The joist finder lasts for only 100-150 tests. The kit includes two joist finders so if you're working with a large area, purchase two kits.
- The joist finder gets extremely hot and will cause burns if not handled properly.
- If possible, use an electronic Deep Scan stud finder rather than the joist finder. It'll save you lots of extra work.
- 100 screws will fix 4-5 squeak spots on your floor. Purchase more screws than you think you'll need.
- Plan on spending 30-45 minutes per squeak. Most of your time will be spent on searching for joints and figuring out how to patter the screws. Some carpet cleaning may be required for lighter-colored carpet.
- Some of the screws may not sink deep enough and will stick up through the carpet. Make sure to sink the screws heads to the maximum allowable by the tool/template.
- The tool/template is plastic, not metal as it appears in the product image.
- If you have berber carpet, be prepared for some damage.
For $16, this product is well worth the money. Just be cautious with the joist finder to prevent carpet damage or burns.
Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome kit!!! Comment: This product really does its job if you use it right, I love it!! It fixed my squeaky floor. Just follow the instruction, know your floor layout, locate the zones of squeak and put some screws with the kit and ... BINGO!! In some places I have to put some screws in an angle, in that case I did not use the tripod but I took care of making sure to insert the screw at the right deep to break off the head. TIP: I use a magnet to locate the nail or screws under my carpet, then I marked them with blue tape (painter tape) to locate my joist, it was really nice and fun!!. I really recommend the kit.
Customer Rating: Summary: Didn't work for me... Comment: I didn't have as many problems fining the joists as other reviewers. There is a good This Old House video online that shows how to use a string to help mark lines once screws are properly placed at the ends of the joists.
However after placing approximately 120 screws (over a two-hour period) in an area that is 4' x 8', the squeaks haven't stopped or even been any quieter. My house is 30 years old, so based off the other reviews I expected it to work. Oh well will tear up the carpet next...need new carpet anyways.
Customer Rating: Summary: Didn't Work for Me...BUT.... Comment: I tried this device with floors going back to the 1940s, and it just couldn't tighten the boards enough to make a big difference. Also, it's meant to be used for floors with carpets, and I was cutting away an old carpet and so the device wasn't much help. If you need to snap the tops of the screws off, that can be done with some pliers.
The best and least expensive way to do this is to use an electric drill with a 1/8th drill bit to drill the holes. Once that's done, use an electric screwdriver to put the screws into the holes; then snap off the heads with pliers or, better, just leave them in. (I hate putting things in that I can't later remove if I need to.)
All in all, the device is only handy if you don't have a drill or an electric screwdriver.
Customer Rating: Summary: Works well for hardwood floors too... Comment: I own a house with hardwood floors and I've been obsessively fixing all the squeaks I find for the past 9 months.
TheO'Berry 3280 Squeak Floor Adapter knob-break-off product works very well, but only on floors where the subfloor is in good condition. If your subfloor is in poor condiation (e.g. it has water damage), you may get what I call a 'dry hole'--where the screw goes in, but because the subfloor is in poor condition, the screw can't 'grab' enough, and will just spin instead of breaking off. If this happens, you have to back the screw off, then try again nearby.
But, I did find a solution for the dry-hole problem. Squeak No More also sells this under-carpet tripod device that limits the depth that the screw goes in, then allows you to break it off.
For hardwoods, I would try the screw with the conventional break-off knobby device, and if I hit a dry-hole, I would back the screw out, then re-screw the screw in with the under-carpet device and break it off. This worked almost every time.
Additional hardwood floor tips:
When drilling the pilot hole in hardwood, only drill down through the hardwood--not the subfloor. The screw grabs better that way.
If you've got a lot of squeeks to fix, two drills will help alot (one for drilling, one for screwing).
Perform your squeak fixes before you sand--the screws can pull the floor down and it will be uneven next to the adjacent floor boards.
Some vendors sell 250 and 500 screws in a box--but the price may be cheaper for two 250s.
The carpet and hardwood screws are exactly the same.
The tripod device can dent the hardwood floor if you push down too hard.
Filling the holes can require multiple application of filler as the filler can shrink/sink.

Squeeeeek No More stops floor squeaks from above the floor by going through the carpet. The tool comes with 50 specially coated scored screws that can pass through the carpet without causing any damage. The tooling drives the screws down to the point the score(weak spot) is slightly below the wood floor. Then with the tool you snap the head of the screw off. You end up with 2 inches of screw thread stopping the floor movement and squeaks with nothing sticking up that you could feel with you bare foot and no visible clue that you went through the carpet. The tool includes a tool that will find your joist from above the floor.
